Time to Kill Boredom the Fun Way!

Another week has gone by. Kids have finished another history report, this time on the American Revolution. We were entering the weekend and I decided we needed some fun in our lives. Okay, the kids needed fun in their lives. Unlike Mom, they can't spend all day reading and be fine.

So I thought... why not a scavenger hunt? But this one would be different than last time. That one was too easy. Too quickly over. No, no. This time it needed to be more of a challenge. This time I wanted multiple options. I wanted them to split up. So I created multiple paths for the girls and boys to take separately. I'm getting help from various scavenger hunt clues I found through Pinterest bloggers. After creating a new board that will be dedicated to scavenger hunts, I took ones that I knew would be useful in our particular household and wrote them down on some business cards I had that the printer messed up. Though note cards work just as well.

Fun looks like this:

One blog post in particular caught my attention. They listed out so many other options that you can incorporate! *Light bulb moment* Now I'm in the zone to really spark the fun. I tried out Word Search Clue. I created a word search that could be solved by eliminating all the letters of a different word.

Then I pushed myself to go a little harder. I wrote 2 messages backwards so that they can become Mirror Messages! And let me tell you, I impressed myself!
Then, while everyone was sleeping, I got to work hiding them all. With them, are things they enjoy. Small things. The idea is, the more you participate, the more "treasures" you will find.

Then I wrote a note explaining my little game. I left the note where they were sure to find it.
Normally, they would've just followed the clues to find their treasures. However, my daughter decided that wasn't enough. She started going around the house and looking for the clues out of order. Oh, the argument I woke to the next morning.... So the next one I do, will have changes.

What can you do when you have multiple kids?

Color coordinate the clues. Then tell them they are only allowed to go after their colors.

Put their names on each clue so that they know if they picked up the wrong clue, they need to put it back and find their own.

My husband had the idea of creating ciphers for each child. Then code their clues. Only their cipher will decode the clue so they can find the next one. This one is trickier, but would definitely make it challenging for them.

Another idea my husband had is to make it so that each clue they find holds a piece of the puzzle towards solving a final riddle that will give the location of a prize OR would be the code to a locked box where the final prize is hidden.
Overall....

Have fun! I spent a few hours working on this one. Trying to get the clues to line up just right and keep the kids all going to their own clues. Which is why I really wasn't happy when I caught my daughter cheating in the game. But ultimately, I created something that would have been so much fun. Keep that in mind as you make yours. It needs to be fun for them, but you will do a better job if you are having fun while you make it!
Let me know what you think! Leave me a comment below on your thoughts. What would you change? What ideas might you have? I'd love to hear them!

Creativity Blooms During Covid-19!

I'm so ready to be free again. For the bookstore to open. The library to reopen... We are missing Free Comic Book Day this year, people! Do you know how hard that is for us nerds? Star Wars Day is canceled. Besides posting a meme... UGH! Yes, that is my response to this craziness.

And so...

To Pinterest I have gone in search of things to occupy the hours. Especially for the kiddos. No school, can't contact their friends, and no yard to play in. There is a pool at their Nona's house, but it's not like we can go there often. Dad works and has school. Mom can't drive them. Well, she could, but not with full confidence of safety. Sooooo.... Yeah. Pinterest ideas!

We started time capsule booklets thanks to their teachers sending them out. Don't think anyone has finished theirs yet. They kinda disappeared after a couple days. But it was fun watching them get started at least.

I tried doing a scavenger hunt. My daughter finished hers the same day I gave it to them. The boys took about 3 days? It was so easy too. They took photos of things they found with their school iPads, just like they do for school assignments. Their heart just wasn't into it like my daughters was. She wanted grand prize!

Now on to the next project. I saw this idea a long while back and decided to expand the options to make it more fun. But I used the principle idea to get started. Let's see how well this goes! Plus, I'm hoping that they can earn prizes from doing a great job. No half-hearted tries here.
For those of you who want to try it as well, I've typed up the prompts so all you have to do is copy and paste into a Word page to print. Don't forget to write out the letter with the instructions. Or print our the one I've typed out for you. Good luck surviving the boredom!
Bag 1:                               Bag 2:                                   Bag 3:
Take a photo                      of a zombie                          riding a dinosaur.
Make a movie                   of a mermaid                       baking a cake.
Write a story                     of a grandma                        flying in space.
Draw a picture                  of your parents                     riding a unicorn.
Create a dance                  of an uncle                            playing a game.
of an aunt                             building a fort.
of a sibling                           having a pillow fight.
of a space man                     getting married.
of a game character             fighting a bear.
                                                                                       dancing with cats.
Dear children,
I have a very important assignment for you. As you can see, I have 3 bags.
  • Take a slip of paper from Bag 1 for your assignment.
  • Take a slip of paper from Bag 2 for the subject of your assignment.
  • Take a slip of paper from Bag 3 for the scene of your assignment.
NO redraws! You keep the first 3 slips of papers you get! You can help each other if you like, but I expect to have your completed assignments by 7PM tonight.
Good luck and may the odds be ever in your favor!

You can always add your own! Make it uniquely fun for your own children. Change when it is due to when you get home from work or the next morning. Or do it as a couple with your spouse even! Hmm... I bet this would be better than the time my husband and I started writing a book together... Either way, I'd love to hear your ideas! So leave me a comment below and let me know what you think. What prompts would you add?

Good Games Expo is next Saturday!

Listen up, gamers, game enthusiasts and those who like to just have fun around those that are in the first two categories. ESports has teamed up with EdYOUcation to host the Good Games Expo here in San Antonio at the New Horizons Computer Learning Center off Vance Jackson and 410.
You can now register to play games such as Hearthstone, League of Legends, Overwatch and Super Smash Bros! Enjoy the tournament and come see the events sponsors. Mark your calendar now as this event is happening next Saturday - on September 17th! Starting at 9 AM and going strong until 11 PM.

Its not just so that we can get our game on or watch those who are true gamers... though that is quite the fun part! No! EdYOUcation also works hard to connect students to the professional world. Sponsors will be setting up to show students how or what they can be capable of.
Who is EdYOUcation? EdYOUcation helps students build a professional profile that will get them on the path to success in a career they can love. How does that work? A student expresses their interest and EdYOUcation will connect them with a company as well as help them build a professional profile. This can help students realize dreams or at least know if their dream is what they really want for the long run. They can get a Shadowship, where they can have the chance to visit and observe what their dream job really entails. This approach helps students to pick a profession they will stick with until graduation and after.
There is a great line up of sponsors so far. Redbull, Blizzard, New Horizons, Twitch, Riot, and Tespa. I'm not at liberty to give much more insight, but I'm bursting with excitement at some of the other possibilities we have lining up. I say "we", because I work at New Horizons as a Classroom Rental Specialist. I've been helping as best I can to get this event set up. As such, I'm urging you guys to keep a watch out for this event. I promise to post more about it as information becomes more publicly available. We want to have everyone in San Antonio interested in this! Follow them on Facebook and share their page!

Lego Americana Roadshow

Another thing we did this weekend, was take the kids to the North Star Mall for the Lego Roadshow. It was a Saturday and Sunday event where kids and adults alike could participate in building a replica of the Liberty Bell as well as go on a scavenger hunt around the mall to various Lego replicas of historical buildings from around America.
These were amazing works of art that resulted from hours of dedicated building.
Once you completed the scavenger hunt, you were awarded a poster with fun information about American history with a Lego twist here and there.
The Liberty Bell build was fun. We grabbed the parts they listed and took them home in bags to build later.
It will go nicely with my custom Lego museum.
They have a couple more stops to make when they leave here on Labor Day. You can see where by going here

Gotta love free pancakes!

Took the kids out to IHOP last night.
You can't pass up 3 hot, free pancakes... Although we had to wait 35 minutes to get to a table... But the kids ate and I didn't have to cook or clean up.
It was completely satisfying. And they will be having another cool special for St. Patrick's day.
So wear green and get your pancake face on! Don't forget to tip the waitress, be patient with them and have fun.

This has been a fun summer so far

While stores are getting ready for back to school sales, I'm still finishing up the summer activities with my kiddos. The Lego store started giving away the second Lego Star Wars poster in the once-a-month promotion they run. Now until the 28th I believe, buy ANY Star Wars merchandise and you get the newest poster.
Next one comes around July 20-26.
Any I do mean ANY Star Wars purchase. I bought a small keychain for $5 to get mine. Plus Carlos hooked me up with a Ninjago dual-sided poster.
After the Lego store we went to Barnes and Noble to turn in our book list and get our free books. The kids picked out some cool ones. I wish I could've gotten one...
Sadly it's one per child, per summer. They do have a great variety of books though. So get reading! And enjoy the last bit of summer.

Free Comic Book Day success!

I couldn't wait to leave work today. The thought of going to Heroes and Fantasies here in town, was driving me to get through the day. As I mentioned last night, today, May 2nd, is the Free Comic Book Day! Comic stores and even some book stores that have comics are giving away free comic books in celebration of reading and love of comics. The store I mentioned had so many to choose from. Everyone was given 2 comics just for visiting the store. Kids under 14 got another bonus one and anyone in costume got a bonus one.
My kids each got 4 comics while my husband and I got 2 each. Anything after that would've been only $1 each. As an added bonus, they had cosplayers you could have your picture taken with.
From here on out, I've decided that I will ask off FCBD. The first Saturday of May is the day to mark each year. So be ready!
What comes next this month? A day to celebrate Star Wars! May the 4th is Monday! And I can't wait to show my support of my favorite saga.
