Family Photos with Bast Creative!

This week, a friend of mine did something amazing. He took some family photos for us. Sure, anyone can use a camera, right? Hmm... no. Not in the way he did. Luis Basurto is an incredibly creative guy. Thus, he has started his own business, Bast Creative. He has degrees in Communication Design. And he is quite passionate about it. He loves it! And now he is finally branching out. Finally sharing his talent outside of his day job.

He was incredibly patient. Setting up a time that worked with everyones schedule was tricky, but he made it work. We chose an evening and a destination, Hemisphere Park. He brought the gear, I brought the family.

He also captured my family as we are, and not as people think we should look for those "family pictures". You know the kind. Where everyone is stiff, posed, and "perfect". I'll be the first to admit, those pictures might look nice, but they aren't real. With four kids, it can be difficult. And chances of getting it just right are very slim. Luis let us do our own thing. And what came from it, was beautiful! It is us.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Well, these pictures tell our story. They show us, just as we are. I highly recommend Luis Basurto at Bast Creative. For photography, for design. He does it all. And he does it well. Check out his website here. He is also on Facebook. And don't hesitate to tell me what you think!

Good Games Expo is next Saturday!

Listen up, gamers, game enthusiasts and those who like to just have fun around those that are in the first two categories. ESports has teamed up with EdYOUcation to host the Good Games Expo here in San Antonio at the New Horizons Computer Learning Center off Vance Jackson and 410.
You can now register to play games such as Hearthstone, League of Legends, Overwatch and Super Smash Bros! Enjoy the tournament and come see the events sponsors. Mark your calendar now as this event is happening next Saturday - on September 17th! Starting at 9 AM and going strong until 11 PM.

Its not just so that we can get our game on or watch those who are true gamers... though that is quite the fun part! No! EdYOUcation also works hard to connect students to the professional world. Sponsors will be setting up to show students how or what they can be capable of.
Who is EdYOUcation? EdYOUcation helps students build a professional profile that will get them on the path to success in a career they can love. How does that work? A student expresses their interest and EdYOUcation will connect them with a company as well as help them build a professional profile. This can help students realize dreams or at least know if their dream is what they really want for the long run. They can get a Shadowship, where they can have the chance to visit and observe what their dream job really entails. This approach helps students to pick a profession they will stick with until graduation and after.
There is a great line up of sponsors so far. Redbull, Blizzard, New Horizons, Twitch, Riot, and Tespa. I'm not at liberty to give much more insight, but I'm bursting with excitement at some of the other possibilities we have lining up. I say "we", because I work at New Horizons as a Classroom Rental Specialist. I've been helping as best I can to get this event set up. As such, I'm urging you guys to keep a watch out for this event. I promise to post more about it as information becomes more publicly available. We want to have everyone in San Antonio interested in this! Follow them on Facebook and share their page!

Our family's trip to the Natural Bridge Caverns!

We managed to get free tickets to the Natural Bridge Caverns via US Family Guide and their partnership with NBC. The caverns are huge and span a large area underground. We had a great time!
The name comes from a natural bridge that is above ground.
The entrance is beautiful but a little intimidating to the little ones.
Because they are underground, they are always cool but the humidity is always high from the moisture that is constant in the air. If you plan on going, I suggest wearing light clothing. Its about a 3/4 mile trek going down then back up. It takes about 75 minutes to get through the whole tour. I almost think we should've slowed down since I felt a little rushed going through it. I suppose they do it that way to fit more tours onto the schedule, but I'd love the chance to enjoy the view more. The ground is slippery but there's a special grip material they put on the steepest parts of the path to help you stay upright as you trudge upwards. I suggest hiking or rubber-soled shoes only. Cowboy boots and heels would be asking for a fall. It would be better if they told people this at the ticket window instead of as the tour was starting, in case someone wanted to change shoes. Fortunately, our shoes were all good. Don't bring a stroller unless you want to carry it up 35 steps or so at the end of the tour. Again, would have been helpful if this was told to us at the ticket window. My husband ended up having to take it to the cafĂ© to sit while the tour was slightly delayed. You are told its best to hold the rails as you go to ensure less of a chance at falling. The ground is wet, steep and can be quite slick. So if you are bringing younger ones, be prepared to hold hands or if its a baby you are bringing, bring a baby carrier of some sort.
Make sure everyone takes their potty breaks before starting the tour. No bathrooms available in the caves! Just trash cans to make sure you don't litter even though food and drinks (except water bottles) are prohibited. The facilities were old but still cleaned well.
The grounds above, surrounding the caverns are also lovely. There are benches to rest on under trees and picnic areas.
Now about what we encountered inside...
At the beginning of the tour our guide, Madison, pointed out crystal formations.
They have lighting every so many feet and highlighting the great things.
Because of the harshness in the caves' makeup, plants are unable to thrive. However, there has been one plant that has survived the years since falling as a spore off one of the explorers. This fern has proven that life is possible deep below the surface.
Madison pointed out the various formations and explained how they formed.
She was so patient. Especially with my crazy kids who kept wanting to talk. The one pictured below is called Bomb Burst. They thought it looked like a mushroom cloud after a bomb exploding.
There were a lot of interesting names to the formations.
This was Sherwood Forest as the formations looked like tall, slender trees. The tallest pillar is called Totem Pole at 32' high.
We walked above Purgatory Creek. It's the deepest point on the tour at 211'.
The King's Throne was a massive formation. You can see a canopy hanging above the king sitting on his throne. Or at least that's how it looked to the explorers. It's located in the second largest room.
The Mount of the Landlord looks like an apartment building of sorts with the landlord sitting atop waiting to swoop in and collect his rent!
The path the tour takes is very different from the way the original explorers came though. They crawled through Grendels Canyon for starters.
This one was pretty funny. This formation is referred to as a Fried Egg for obvious reasons. As water falls from the ceiling, once it drops it's leaves the colorized part in the middle while the outer rim turns white.
Also available is the maze. It's $7.99 to get in though. Towards the end of the tour, they take your picture which is printed and ready by the time you get out. It's $10+ tax.
A few things I should mention....
This tour can be quite strenuous. There is quite a bit of leg work going into the trek. Since you can't touch the rocks or walls, you have only handrails to grasp on some parts of the trip. The oils from your fingers can and will discolor the rocks. Bats might be seen. There is a lot of bat explanation going on but it was really cool. Towards the last leg of the walk, there's a water fountain that channels cave water. Definitely not like your spring water and not very cold.
Madison gave some fun facts to help you remember the difference between stalagmites and stalactites. Stalagmites MIGHT reach the ceiling one day. Stalactites hang right from the ceiling.
All the staff we encountered were friendly.
Oh and we should've stopped off on Bat Cave Loop to check on Batman... But I was already tired. >.<

Brick Fiesta

What an amazing event! We had a blast. Everything from the MOC's on display to the vendors with great things on sale.
I loved it. My kids weren't as thrilled, but only because there wasn't anything for them to play with and build with.
There were custom builders who even created war sets.
This one was a 1942 scene that was amazingly detailed. As was the following; The Hobbit Shire.
I'm hoping to have a custom Katniss Everdeen in the mockingjay dress made. Modern Brick Warfare had some pieces they customized to more than just 3D. It looked like paint but raised up. Really cool.
Parking was a bit crazy. The event was held in the conference room of a hotel, but with a restaraunt next door. And parking filled up rather quickly. You weren't allowed to bring outside food and some people were told to leave their strollers parked outside the doors as well. It's understandable considering the space was hard to maneuver in with so many people.
The bathrooms were located in the hall outside the great room along with a water cooler.
Everything was run by volunteer AFOL's. They host these events in a circuit that runs yearly. Next year should be hosted in the Houston area. So be sure and follow their page to keep up with where you can see some amazing builds! https://facebook.com/brickfiesta
We stopped by our favorite vendor who is also a local store owner, San Antonio Plastic Bricks Inc. https://facebook.com/SanAntonioPlasticBricks
More pictures of some of my favorite builds. Air Zombie and the tools were great!
1950's Drive In
Air Zombie
Castle with an Army
My Little Pony Castle
The huge airport where Air Zombie was.
Awesome tool shed equipment.
Looks like Grandma, Red Riding Hood and the Woodsman lost the battle against the Wolf!
This guy taught his son engineering skills using Lego. This device spun a huge top showing kids how speed mixed the red and blue parts to look like purple and pink parts on the side. It was interactive for my kids.

Lego!

Everyone should know how I enjoy building Lego sets. I reviewed the Pleygo service, which I still think is awesome. But I know that some people would rather buy them to own and display. Or... you could be like me and need that one part to complete a set and not want to buy another full set just to get it. If you are local, and in need of Lego anything (just about), there is a place to go besides the Lego store at the mall. San Antonio Plastic Bricks, Inc. is a local store front. It is a family owned company that has been growing over the past 2+ years and I must say, quite amazing. The owner, Ron, buys and sells in Lego kits (sets), parts, mini figures, manuals... list goes on. If you have some to sell, stop by and see him. He even has custom mini figures that are really well done.
I'm hoping to finish my own project after making a stop by his store...
For those who aren't local, but still interested - fear not! There is hope for you through the wonderful, World Wide Web. He sells via Brick Link, eBay, Amazon.
And keep up with what's going on through the
Facebook page.

Alisa, I hope Artie enjoys the video! Thanks for being such a strong supporter of my blog and yes, I'm going to get your kids hooked on Lego!!! 8-)
