Marry Where You Met - Yay or Nay?

Ever think back to that first time you met the love of your life? I sure do. Often. When I first met him, I hated his guts. True story! I couldn't stand him. Didn't want to have to work with him. That is where we met. At work. At Target. But that isn't the story I'm wanting to tell today.

I have seen a lot of posts online that show people getting married where they met. I knew another couple at the first Target I worked at who had requested to get married in the store. That request was promptly denied.

Personally, I couldn't dream of the perfect wedding including walking through the clothing section of Target and ending in a cross section walkway. Something like this seems more like a joke to me than committing to a serious life choice. But to each their own, right?  Target's Wedding Registry Offers 15% Off Discounts & More

This got me curious about where other people might have gotten married that is... unusual. Apparently, grocery stores have even made that list. As have graveyards - taking 'til death do us part' to a whole new level. Fast food restaurants like McDonald's and Taco Bell have joined in for their food lovers. This post even showed one couple that said their vows while standing over a net stretched out over a canyon. Um, no thanks!

What is the strangest wedding location you have heard about? Or what unique place might you want to get married at? If I were to do it again, maybe a comic convention....

Taking a Step Back In Time At the Waxahachie Scarborough Renaissance Festival!

I absolutely love Renaissance festivals! This is my second time going to one. It is hosted in Waxahachie (Texas). Fun for the whole family. My husband and I took the kiddos. You can too! Every weekend through May 31st. The Scarborough Renaissance Festival is a must!

*Disclaimer: I was granted free entry passes to enjoy a day at the festival with my family through my association with US Family Guide. I was not otherwise paid or endorsed. All opinions expressed are strictly my own.*

Each weekend has its own thrills.

Festivals are such a great experience. There is food, music, shows, vendors - everything you need to have a good time.

This one in particular is geared for families. Before going, I like to check out their options. To know ahead of time which things I want to see and do. What don't I want to miss? Each weekend has a theme with specials running. The first weekend, for example, was kids free weekend. The weekend we went, second, was all about shopping! Artisan's Showcase is what they called it. I was worried when I realized I picked our weekend for this one. The themes each come with special activities. And I was thinking we wouldn't enjoy it as much as the others. The Live the Fantasy & Spring Celebration, Celebrating Chivalry, and Legend of the Seas were all ones I'd love to have been a part of. I even appreciate that they have Deaf Day on May 15th! Shows are signed for them. Way to go on exclusivity! But it worked out great. We brought our receipts in and earned 2 free tickets to go back! So excited. We are planning to try to go back for a date. Just us adults. I totally plan to cosplay on this next trip there. Before we even exited the SUV, we could see others in costume heading to the festival. I regretted not wearing my own!

As you will see in the interview I had with the Marketing Director, Helaine, there is something for every person.

No matter when you go. And you can't get through everything in one day. Believe me, we tried! It's impossible.

Some events are pre-scheduled to happen every day of each weekend. You can get the full schedule HERE. My husband would have loved the Historic Weapons Demo. Sadly, we arrived too late the first time we went. I was wanting to see the Fire Whip Show. Totally worth going to! This guy was on fire! Okay, his whips were!

And who doesn't like the Cannon Drill? There are lots of other shows for those who love music too. Next time we want to see the Glassblower show too.

Time for FUN!

Jousting is something we have always wanted to see.

We missed out on the Medieval Times show last year, due to the pandemic. So this year, we wanted to see it at the festival. I highly suggest you go and get your place early. Kiddos couldn't see by the time we got there from the heavy crowd around the arena. My daughters wouldn't be able to resist seeing a mermaid in the Mermaid Lagoon.
Or how about all of them being knighted by Their Majesties!
I was impressed by the Games they had to offer. My husband and I are talking about knife and axe throwing next time we go. My son was fun to watch in the barrel ride.

Food to impress each palate.

Doesn't matter what kind of food appeals to you. There is such a wonderful variety that each and every person should find something to be delighted by! The kids chose slices of pizza that were well seasoned.

My absolute favorite of the day was the peanut butter and chocolate crepe!

Mmmm it was delicious. The kids loved the caramel apples.

These fruit smoothies were amazing. More like slushies. We tried the strawberry and the Dreamcicle (orange) versions.

My favorite was definitely the orange. My husband modeled off how good they are!

Another thing to try came from the Far East Stir Fry kitchen. This serving runs $6.
And the turkey legs on a stick?? Huge! Although the sausage on a stick was delicious too.

Don't forget to shop!

Finally, you can't leave without getting a souvenir. They have shops and vendors of all kinds. There is something for every age to appreciate. So don't forget to take a memento with you. I grabbed these two pins for my pin collection for just $1 each.

My absolute favorite shop was the Glass Dragon. You want to talk about amazing skills, this guy has them!

You can watch him work, and then purchase pieces that will blow the minds of everyone who sees them. We bought a beautiful glass sword with dragon claw necklace. It comes with a warranty. If it were to get broken, we could bring it back and he will fix it!

We bought a training bow as well. This too comes with a lifetime warranty from it's maker. Before I get any comments - I know I'm not holding it correctly! I simply wanted to show it off and wasn't thinking about form.

My husband says this is the gangsta version of archery...

I saw this and knew we had to get it for my husband. As you can see, he likes to goof around with it!

They have candle makers, word workers, blacksmiths - you name it, they most likely have the artisan to make it there. Check out the tiny pewter treasure chest that is the same size as my Minecraft figures! My little Drowned is the guardian of its secrets.

I appreciate their reactions to pandemic conditions. They have these handwashing stations set up everywhere.

Water fountains have Covid Cautious Cups to use too and they are constantly cleaning the bathrooms. Cleanest public restrooms I've seen in a long while. All the employees we came across, no matter the job, were funny and friendly. I didn't see a single frown anywhere!
If you go, let me know what you like best!

Snowed In Means - SCIENCE!

Texas has been in a state of emergency. We have been seeing single digits over most, if not all, of the state. Icy roads have ended school temporarily, meaning we had a whole week at home with the kids. Also shut down the need to go to work for many people. My husband stocks shelves at the grocery store and even he was told no shifts - which I was grateful for. The roads are finally thawing and we are just getting above freezing. The windows in our old house are all single pane. Every single one of them had frozen shut inside and out.

We have ice inside!

So I thought 'It will be a fun time'. At first, it wasn't. Firewood was sold out in the stores when we went to looking for it. So I pulled out the heavy blankets, was keeping all the shades and curtains drawn, and we were bundling up as much as possible. They are still telling people to not use much electricity as the state grid isn't strong enough to handle all this. But then their "rolling blackouts" plan failed leaving most of our town in particular freezing in the dark anyhow.

So how were we to pass the time?

Four kids, shut inside, for the next "several" days, according to our governor. I needed to get creative so we could avoid our version of cabin fever. It would be one heck of a time. With below freezing temperatures dropping to single digits, and then in the negatives, we saw lots of snow again. Ice is still everywhere. And that gave me some ideas!

She blinded me with science!

Mama just happened to remember that Pinterest posted picture of frozen water balloons. Inside, there was food coloring. You put them outside to freeze. The next day (or in our case, a few hours) you remove the balloon and you have beautiful colored ice orbs!

Before the storm, we went to the Dollar Tree and I picked up some balloons. The kids helped me get the food coloring into them and I filled them with water. My husband laid each one in turn outside on the already frozen ground. We had a light layer of ice, with snow falling.

Didn't take long for the snow to fall heavier and faster. Until there was easily an 3+ inches there. Icicles hung from every edge - doors, windows and eaves. By the time it stopped, we had 6 inches.

It is beautiful! But SOOOO cold! We couldn't take very long outside. Every step outside had to be done with several layers, good gripping shoes - the works! But so worth it to bring fun to the kids. I even saw where you could make these orbs glow with very small glow sticks!

Sadly, our power went out. For 3 days. We abandoned trying to wait for it to come on and went to stay with my in-laws. They still had power and we were grateful to finally get warm again. Before we left, however, we learned how to make a fire with wet wood! The kids helped us drag sticks in from the branch that my husband cut down. They enjoyed helping out. They also ripped up the cardboard boxes we used to feed the flames. I considered this a valuable life lesson. Should they ever have need of starting a wet wood fire, they know how to do so!

Back to the balloons. I found that though we laid them out the night of the big storm, the part resting on the ground didn't freeze! This was lesson one for us. About the snow providing a protective layer that prevented the under side from freezing. The part exposed to the falling snow did. The kids loved when I showed them that. So I moved them up and flipped them over to freeze fully.

After getting word that power was turned back on, my husband and I went to check it out. We wanted to make sure it was and check that the pipes hadn't burst, despite taking the recommended precautions. We also needed to wash the children's pants. They have been outgrowing their jeans rapidly during these cold months. One of my sons rips the knees of his athletic pants like paper all the time. While at the in-laws home, the gas line froze to the washing machine. We learned lessons on using a hand crank version. Definitely need a wringer with one of those! Perhaps Nona shall be getting one for her Mother's Day gift this year... We had a discussion on severe weather prepping. It is amazing what things you find yourself in need of!

While checking out the house, I checked on the orbs. Each one was covered in a thick layer of slick ice. Under the ice, you could see that the balloons were starting to split from the expanding ice. But they were pretty underneath. I took photos to show the kiddos until we could bring them home. It was fun to watch the progress. Both with the weather and the orbs. They also helped their aunt start building an igloo in the yard. I couldn't handle being out in the cold much. Made me hurt so much.

Another way I love to pass the time is by working puzzles. This is a favorite pasttime for me. I find it calming. A way to clearly process my thoughts and find peaceful focus. Especially with this Nene Thomas fairy one!

Wherever you are, whatever your situation is, I hope you are able to find little fun ways to get through the days. As well as stay healthy and warm.

Celebrating Birthdays During the Pandemic

This year feels over without ever truly getting started. Ever since Covid-19 took over, nothing has seemed "normal" to say the least. Outages in stores, wearing masks, being confined at home, closures of businesses and buildings - it has been a roller coaster! But now we have big choices to make. Choices on birthday celebrations. To do, or not  to do, lists. Obviously, there won't be parties. Okay, most likely... We can't have anyone over. Even if someone wanted to, my husband works closely with the public. So closely, that in less than 2 weeks time, there had been at least 6 cases announced on the overnight crew alone at his store. No one who fears getting sick wants to be around us.

So how do I make these birthdays special?

I've been prodding around Pinterest. After all, I know I'm not the only parent with this question. On the Nextdoor.com website, I've seen local moms asking strangers to send birthday cards or drive by in a parade during a certain time frame on the day. The neighbor across from us had a police PR car come by, followed by folks from around town in a parade! It was great just watching the turnout. Fantastic ideas! But I wanted to see what else is being done. I have 3 kids celebrating their birthdays before Christmas this year. The way things look right now, there won't be much celebrating going on for the rest of this year - nothing with extended family and most friends at least. Even school was talking about staying virtual, or not at all, until at least September 8th. So glad they revised that to begin in person and online August 24th! My son might actually be able to have a real party...
I have a son turning 12, a daughter turning 8 and the youngest is turning 4. I want their days to be special, even if it is just us. I don't want the memory of this years birthday being simply that it was during a pandemic.

What plans have I come up with?

The oldest daughter comes first in just two weeks. She has been wanting a unicorn mermaid party. First things first - I saw a great idea for starting her special day right. When she wakes up that morning, I will have decorated as though there was a party coming. I'm thinking about having my husband get her a balloon to hang from her bed. Or even putting a bunch of balloons in front of her door so that when she opens it, they spill out around her!
Well, maybe not... in case her little sister opens the door before she does... In which case I found this idea instead!
Breakfast will be pancakes that are decked out with whipped topping and strawberry syrup. I found a new recipe I wanted to try out just for her.
She will decide what we have for dinner that day too. And then we will eat on plates from the Dollar Tree, as I picked up some mermaid ones that are perfect for her theme. Next is a mermaid cake, followed by presents! Or maybe I will let her open gifts before dinner... We shall see what the day looks like closer to that time. One idea that stands out, though, is to have a scavenger hunt, of a sort. With clues that lead her from one birthday treasure to another. My mother has already sent gifts and I was thinking that wrapping each one individually and having my daughter find them would be something fun just for her.
Dollar Tree finds that could be helpful if you need the same theme.
Then comes my son.

He is turning 12. Pre-teens are coming on strong with this one. He's actually showing darker hair above his upper lip! I'm in so much trouble...
He had wanted another gaming style party. Being that his birthday is in October, he might actually have a chance at having friends over. IF the pandemic craziness winds down. If not, I have a couple ideas percolating already.
His day will start much like his sisters. But I'm thinking that he will spend a good majority of it playing video games. I'll have to find a cool gamer cake - or come up with my own design. But I think I will reach out and get anyone who is willing, to write a card to him. In the cards, I'm going to ask that everyone write out a piece of advice. Something for him to grow on. I think we will also do a printable Bingo I found here.

Last, but not least...

We have the toddler. This little darling is turning 4 already! And her dreams of unicorns dancing around her birthday are often told to me. That, and her desire for more mermaid toys. Her birthday is dangerously close to Thanksgiving. Plenty of time to hope things clear up, but if not, plenty of time to plan. We don't really enjoy combining her birthday with Thanksgiving dinner. She doesn't want us calling her our "Little Butterball Baby". And who can blame her?! So, I am planning to have her unicorns stationed all around the house for her special day. I'm going to decorate with mermaids and unicorns. She's going to have special pancakes too. Her day can stay simple. She's only 4. And so long as she can open presents, she's a happy girl! Oh and, lest I forget, her unicorn cake that Daddy found at work... If you haven't seen these new ones yet, they are awesome!
Even if they do have Red40 and other artificial coloring. (But that is for another blog post.) She has been reminding us that she wants the unicorn cake nearly every week now.
Dollar Tree finds that could be helpful for your unicorn lovers.

So what about you? In what ways are you making the kid (or kids) in your life have special birthdays when parties aren't acceptable? I'd love to hear your ideas, so leave me a comment below! And be sure to check out my Pinterest board. I have party ideas of all kinds at the ready! Including pandemic ideas.

Beating the Never-Ending Summer Blues

I feel like summer has been going on since Spring Break. Technically, my kids had school (albeit at home), starting about 2 weeks after Spring Break ended. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, home has been our prison of a sorts. I have gotten creative with challenging their minds. Free time has been filled with reading, writing and as much learning as I can get them into without exhausting them. I recreated this one game I saw on Pinterest (see my blog post here).

What to do when boredom strikes....

Sadly, that game has gotten too repetitive. We started a challenge every night at dinner where I would ask questions. Mostly from history, though I threw in some geographical ones too. I was amazed how few things my children could answer. They know only the things we have taught them on World War 2, Lewis and Clark, the Boston Tea Party, the Vietnam War, the Great Wall of China... My younger son actually said he thought the Great Wall of China was built to keep out the Mexicans! *palm to forehead here* They just finished 4th grade! But I digress. I started them reading books and writing reports on historical events that I find important. I also got a book on geography for them to study over the summer. And while this is all great stuff, I can't overwhelm them with learning all the time. Not unless I can make it fun.

So off to Pinterest I went again. My searches always bring up great ideas later on. And that is where this next challenge came up. It involves Lego, which my children have lots of. You will also need a timer and an account with Teachers Pay Teachers. Don't worry, this printable is completely free! The LegoLibrarian is a genius. I plan to head back for other challenge ideas later.

Here is how the game works:

Each child gets to build an island. I gave my kids 20 minutes to do so with any Lego pieces they wanted. Once the timer dinged, I handed each one a handful of pieces more and took the rest away. I set the timer for 15 minutes more after letting them pick from the challenge cards here.
When that time was up, my husband and I had each child explain their island and how they overcame their challenges. Today was the first time we did it and it was a success. 2/3 kids really put in the effort to add details.
The challenge for this kid was to build a trap to catch a thief.
My daughter had to find another way to make food for her island.

So give it a go! And don't forget to share the fun with us. Let me know in the comments below how your kids liked it or what you think is best about this little game!
