How Reading Eggs Has Changed the Summer

All of my kids have been fighting boredom from day to day during the pandemic. The toddler in particular has sometimes needed an escape. When her siblings are playing or busy reading, she can feel left out. So I've been glad to have her working on Reading Eggs and learning throughout the summer. I present this review in partnership with US Family Guide and Reading Eggs.

*Disclaimer: I was given my subscription free of charge in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own. I was not otherwise paid or endorsed.*
Do you need something constructive to keep your kids learning in a fun way? Reading Eggs might just be what you are looking for! During the pandemic, there are lots of kids stuck at home. Choices are limited. And backsliding in what they had learned is a real problem. Reading Eggs has several options to choose from that could help your child learn to read, become a better reader, get help with math or give you, the parent, additional resources to stock up on!

What is Reading Eggs?

It is a comprehensive reading program for ages 2-13 that teaches reading through games and challenges, helps readers boost their reading skills, and keeps them engaged in reading. One thing I have been afraid of is having one or more of my children seeing reading as a chore. I want them to love reading. Even if they aren't that good at it. My oldest is especially like this. He likes reading when he likes the story. His favorites are ones that come in comic book form or are game characters. So once he finishes a series he likes, he flounders through other books. And he has trouble staying in his grade level. Reading Eggs boosts their confidence. The more they accomplish in the game, the more they feel able to continue. They are learning without realizing it.
My toddler loves it!

Medieval Times in Dallas is Re-Opening on the 15th!

Before the pandemic, we had plans to go see Medieval Times. Dinner and a jousting show! What more could we want?? Sadly, we arrived right after they shut Dallas down. But our trip wasn't a total bust. We met the manager, who was kind enough to give us a personal tour and tell us all about the show, the horses, the characters! It was amazing.
I'd always heard about Medieval Times, yet I'd never had the pleasure of going. It is more than a meal. It is also more than a show. It is an experience. An unforgettable one. Since our trip, I have kept in touch with the manager as well as followed the Dallas Castle to see what was going on. Far from sitting idle on the sidelines, they have been actively assisting the community and keeping the online entertainment going!
Videos have been shared on their Facebook page and YouTube channel. I love the funny ones that the knights and queens made from various castles, showing how they are surviving the pandemic. They show off the horses and falcons which are still being well cared for (which makes this horse lover very happy). My 3 year old has been talking about the horses since that trip in March. She can't wait to see them again. Magnificent creatures, they are still participating in trainings with their riders.

The knights at Medieval Times truly care about the horses. They aren't like
circus animals - they are like a part of the Medieval Times family. As are
their falcons.
We were still planning to take our trip up there. My husband had even asked off some time towards the end of July. However, things here are ramping up again and we won't be able to make that trip after all. Normally, I'd be writing this post as a review, but instead I wanted to tell you guys some great news about their reopening. Right now, they are offering a great discount. You can currently get 25% off your ticket purchases.
Now is when you want to start purchasing your tickets and planning your visit. They will be reopening on July 15th. Using health guidelines, they have plotted out the best way to allow everyone back in without compromising the health and safety of all their guests.
Planning Your Trip

They want to make sure you are ready and enjoy your trip to the fullest! So they have their own blog post to help you through the decision-making process. Check it out HERE.
Don't just take my word for it though. From my conversations with the manager and from what I've seen in our trip, I think this is the perfect way to break the monotony and ruts we have been in during the pandemic. It is time to get out there and share smiles with those you care about. And watching knights in action while eating the feast of a Queen?! How can you go wrong with such a combination??
Do me a favor though. If you have ever been, or if you go, won't you please tell me all about it? Leave me a comment. I'd like to live the adventure through your story. Stay well!

Hickies can be a parents best friend...

Not that kind of hickie! Get your mind out of the gutter...
As part of the US Family Guide, I'm reviewing Hickies - No Tie Elastic Shoelaces. I have an 8 and a 6 year old that both have no interest in learning to tie their own shoes. We have attempted many times to go over the easiest ways to do so, without success. So I was quite thrilled to be offered the chance to try out Hickies.
These are no-tie elastic shoelaces. You simply thread them through the holes and fasten. They turn your sneakers or tennis shoes into easy, streamlined, slide on shoes! My kids prefer to slide their shoes on anyhow, even if they are the kind that get tied. This way, I'm not slowed down having to tie them each time we have to go somewhere. They have a great tutorial to walk you through the process in getting started with using them.
I like how sturdy they are. My kids wear out their shoelaces painfully quick. Shoelaces come unraveled and don't want to re-thread as they should.
They also loosen over time when your kids keeping sliding their shoes on or off. These things hold their elasticity.

Some good points in their favor:
  • They work with any shoe that has eyelets.
  • One size fits all.
  • Elastic keeps shoes secure and comfortable.
  • Play will be uninterrupted by pesky retying.
  • Fun look without knots and bows.
  • 3 levels of adjustable tightness.
  • Quick and easy to slide on or off and be on your way.
They have a current promotion running through US Family Guide. You can get 20% off just in time for stocking stuffers! Use the code, USFG at checkout to save. This code expires on November 30th, however, so you better check them out soon. Use the link below to get started.

Also on their website, if you buy 2+ packs, shipping is only 99 cents. And if you buy 4, you get another for free. Stack up the savings and give them to kids you know as stocking stuffers. Save the parents some grief this coming year.

Summer Time Fun at Schlitterbahn!

If there is one water park I love bringing the family to, it would have to be Schlitterbahn! The rides, the water, free parking, bring your picnic! Need I say more? I think I do actually. They also have great promotions. Which means a lot for families these days. Vacations can be pretty pricey. But staying at a Schlitterbahn resort doesn't have to be. Thanks to my connections with the US Family guide as a mommy blogger, I'm getting to share these deals with you and will hopefully be allowed to share a review post if we get selected to make a trip there.
Check out the promotions they have running here:
South Padre Island
Galveston
New Braunsfels
I'd have to say that New Braunfels is my favorite! Not just because of how close it is to home, but because we each find things we enjoy there. Plus some rides connect to the river, they recycle the water and cut back on waste.
Below is fun information that was provided on the various parks.
Key News for Schlitterbahn:
Every park has a fact sheet on our newsroom, but here are some fast facts.
Schlitterbahn New Braunfels is our flagship park and is America's #1 waterpark for 18 years and has won awards for the best waterpark, best waterpark ride (The Master Blaster) and best new ride (Dragon's Revenge.)
Schlitterbahn has been the birthplace of nearly every waterpark ride innovation including the world's first uphill water coaster and the inland surfing ride, the Boogie Bahn.

Every park has a claim to fame:
- New Braunfels - World's longest tube ride; America's Favorite Waterpark.
- South Padre Island - World's first Transportainment system where interconnected rivers are queue lines for rider, this way you never have to leave your tube!
- Galveston - Building the world's tallest water coaster.
- Kansas City - World's tallest water slide.
- Corpus Christi - Longest river system in Texas.

Green Facts on our South Padre Beach Resort:
Ropes: Over three miles of 3-inch mooring ropes from dozens of former ships have been painstakingly wrapped around giant concrete structural poles on our Sea 4ever 10,000 square foot patio.

Green House: The retractable roof over our indoor waterpark was built from a large greenhouse - an old Schultz nursery.
Lobby Check in Counter: Built from salvaged walnut trees which were pulled from a road project in Kansas.

Parapet Walls: The hatch covers came off a famous US Troop carrier the John E. Pope and are used on parapet walls and also to make tables. Over 500 are on site.

Chandeliers: The beautiful chandeliers hanging in the Sea 4ever event patio were salvaged from an aging Vegas hotel. Our team glued shells to them and hung in the ceiling.

Waterslides: Yes, even some of the water slides were recycled. The water slides in our indoor park came from a park in Cleveland Ohio, were salvaged, refurbished, and re-installed.
Handrails: An old Dutchman Downs Stadium was the source for all the handrails.

Loblolly Pines: In 2011, a major wildfire raged through Bastrop County, Texas in September. Three separate fires started during Labor Day weekend and by the time it was controlled, it destroyed 1,691 homes and burned over 34,000 acres of land including the vast majority of Bastrop State Park's 5,900 acres of Loblolly Pines. The Lost Pines Forest, thought to have originated in or before the Pleistocene era, was also heavily impacted.
For safety, the burned pines had to be removed. These scorched trees were destined for the grinder who would have turned them into mulch. Jeff Henry, with Schlitterbahn, offered to take the fallen trees, then had them milled, beginning the process of transforming the pines from scorched wood to the most dramatic feature throughout the Schlitterbahn Beach Resort at South Padre.

FYI: You'll also find the pines all over Schlitterbahn New Braunfels - look for the pine paneling in the Riverbend cabins and the lovely furniture pieces here and there. We'll try to point them out during your tour.

Where you will find the Bastrop Pines in the South Padre Beach Resort:
- Rooms: In most rooms the cabinets, coffee tables, nightstands, and headboards are made from the Bastrop Loblolly Pines.
- Dining areas: Large tables are made from the Loblolly Pines.
- Lobby: The large tree stump tables by the doors leading to the heated pool are from the fire, as is the siding along many of the interior walls.
- External: The siding on the outside walls of the resort are made from Loblolly Pines.

Something I thought was amazing - It's The Year of Anniversaries!
World's Most Award Winning Uphill Water Coaster, The Master Blaster, turns 20: The Schlitterbahn New Braunfels park is home to a guest favorite, the world famous Master Blaster. Built in 1996, this 2.5 minute ride is over 65 feet tall and sends guests on an exhilarating ride down two, 3 story drops. It is easily the most iconic uphill water coaster in the world. Have you ridden the Master Blaster yet?
